North/South
So I was riding the bus today. I had to go down to the South side of Seattle. On my way back home (from South to North) I noticed a disparity. When we were in the south end, there were mostly minorities on the bus. As we progressed further north, the minorities exited and white people got on. By the time we got to my stop, there was not a single minority on the bus (except for the bus driver, which is a whole different story). I just think it's interesting how we are still fairly segregated into North and South. Think about most cities, and not just major ones. Usually the south end is where minorities live, where poverty, drugs, and crime are the highest, and where at least one school is named MLK. Think about it.

hmm.. philadelphia, yes. baltimore, sort of. new york.. not really? maybe within some of the neighborhoods. bethlehem yes! minneapolis, opposite: north is the area of poverty crime and drugs, south is generally fine. which is why i'm designing schoolyard farms and gardens for four north minneapolis schools! all the fast food is centered in north minneapolis, as are the schools for kids with difficulties and pregnant or mothering girls. so i'm setting up a system of gardens so that the schools can integrate nutrition, gardening, trade, culinary skills like canning, etc. into their curriculums. just thought i'd share, since it's kind of related :)
so many thoughts on this...
Can I just say that it is almost as if you read my mind? I was JUST discussing this SAME observation with a friend this weekend. Crazy isn't it? There have been studies done that discuss this in regards to countries -- its just interesting that it breaks down into cities as well. Insane.
p.s. how cool is what hayley is doing? awesome.
yeah, hayley is rad!
