I can't eat that...

Something that annoys me is when vegans (and vegetarians for that matter) say they CAN'T eat something.  Like if someone offered me a brownie and I was like "No thank you, I can't eat that", that would be really annoying to me.  It just irritates me and gets under my skin like crazy.  Because you CAN eat it, I can eat it.  It's not like I'm allergic to milk or eggs or meat.  It's that I CHOOSE not to eat them.  So it's not that I can't, I just don't.  And yeah it really frustrates me when I hear other vegans/vegetarians say they can't eat something.  And I guess I understand because sometimes other people (especially at restaurants) get annoyed that they have to make something special for you because you choose to eat that way.  They are much more helpful and understanding if they think you can't eat something for whatever reason.  But I dunno, it's just one of those things that really bugs me.  So if someone offers me some ice cream I will politely say that I don't eat dairy and that's it.

well let's think about this for a moment. i think sometimes people use "can't" synonymously with "can't tolerate"... can we help what we tolerate? i often say " i can't tolerate movies" when really i am choosing not to go see a violent movie. but it's barely a choice, because i really CANNOT tolerate that, like it physically hurts. same with meat. if someone paid me a million dollars, i seriously would still say I CAN'T eat that steak. it would kill me. i don't know. i don't know.

edit: i often say "i can't tolerate VIOLENCE." not just movies. movies are nice. violent movies are not nice.
