The internet at my house has been being very crazy recently, so I missed a few posts a couple days ago. I figured I would write my typical Sunday post today.
Every Sunday I Sabbath. I think it is a good practice for everyone to take 1 day a week and rest and not do ANY work. Additionally, as a Christian, God commands us to take this one day away from work and spend it with Him. It is not a command as in you MUST do this and you should feel guilty if you don't and you will go to hell. It is more that God created us and he knows how we operate and he knows that we do much better with life if we take one day to rest. In addition, it humbles us and enables us to have faith. It reminds us that the world will go on without us and maybe we aren't as important as we think we are. And in times when we are particularly busy, it allows us to put our faith into practice by trusting that God will give us the time to do everything that we need to do. There were many times in college that I felt like I didn't have enough time to get a paper done. But I Sabbathed anyway, and I ended up having more time than I needed to finish the paper. Now, when I am not as busy but instead am drained emotionally, it is great to take an entire day to rest and rejuvenate and re-focus on God. It gives me a jump start to each week.
For me, my Sabbath doesn't NEED to be on a Sunday. It can be any day of the week. But right now, the way my schedule works out, it just happens to be on Sunday. There is no need to get caught up on what day it should happen on. It just needs to be one day out of 7 and should be somewhat of a routine.
I like to spend as much of the day outside as possible. Usually in a park which there are SO many of here in Seattle. I just sit and read or pray or think or draw or talk to friends and just all together REST and reflect on the previous week and look forward to what the next week will bring. It really is sometimes the only thing that keeps me together and I so look forward to that time with God each week.
This particular Sunday was quite wonderful. I rode my bike to 2 different parks and sat there pretty much all day. I packed a nice lunch for myself and spent the whole day with just me, my Creator, and His creation. I thought through some things that I needed to think about, I got rid of all of my anxieties for this week, and I worshiped God for all that he SUFFERED so that I can live.
Anyways, I don't mean to be all preachy, but this day of rest has been something amazing for me and I really would encourage you, Christian or not, to consider it.
