Today was the first time I have done laundry in Seattle. Well actually not really. I did it the first day I got here because I had to wash all of my clothes that were in the bag that was on the roof when we drove across the country because it rained a bit and they all smelled like mold. But that didn't really count because I was trying to get it done quickly and so I used the dryer.
Anyways, today was my first real laundry day. I threw the clothes in the washing machine (which is in my house but I have to pay $1.50 for. Not cool.) and went up to my room to assemble some kind of clothesline. Using the dryer is super wasteful and serves no purpose unless you are in a super hurry or are just lazy. Since most of the time I am neither in a rush nor lazy, I generally line dry my clothes. This, of course, is not to say that I am never lazy, just generally not when it comes to drying my clothes because it doesn't take that much effort and there really is no reason not to. Usually if I care about something, I will not be lazy about it. TANGENT. So, yeah, I grabbed some screws and my twine and went to work. Except for I couldn't find my screw driver. I think one of my roommates borrowed it and I don't know where it is. I searched the house. So I just used my hand. It was a bit difficult and my finger hurt afterwards, but the walls were fairly soft. I attached the twine, it kind of looked like a giant maze in my room. By that time, my clothes were done in the wash and brought them back upstairs and threw them on the line:
They take a few hours to dry, but it's so much better than using the dryer (and paying another $1.50). I actually kind of enjoy it. It's pretty relaxing and I feel good about it. When I do use the dryer, I feel really crappy and lazy and like I didn't plan well enough.
I am not saying by any means that EVERYBODY should do it this way. I understand so many reasons why people wouldn't and they make a lot of sense. But for me in my stage of life right now and with what I am doing and all of that, it works for me and I'm glad that it does. I'm glad that I can save some energy by using a little of my time. Although I can foresee times in my life that this would be completely not possible. So for now, this is what my laundry days will look like.

when would this not be possible? i mean if you can do it in one room, or in a dorm or anywhere small, why would it be more difficult later in life (since most people get bigger places as they get older)? i can't find a reason for using a dryer...
I'm not thinking that space will be an issue, I'm more thinking about time. Like if I'm working full time and have a few kids and need to do laundry fairly often (especially when they are really little and go through a LOT of clothes). Or when I'm super old and it is a struggle to do my own laundry at all. It is a fairly easy thing that is pretty important, and I guess if you REALLY care about it then you will make it work. But there are things that I care more about that I could see getting in the way, like kids.
